The Review
The beauty of Kim Fielding’s stories is their deceptive simplicity. They flow so well that a reader is quickly sucked into the situation, instantly bonds with the protagonist, is pulled along by the flow of the plot, and feels a gratifying release at the end.
Christmas Present displays all those traits and puts the reader instantly in the holiday mood.
Big, burly, easy-going Lewis doesn’t mind being transported around the world from pillar to post once a year on Christmas Eve as the representative of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Present. Lewis usually leads a lonely life, but it’s enlivened once a year since he was unexpectedly called to put on the traditional robe, scabbard, and wreath to issue his warning for people to change their lives.
However, this year when he’s transported to somewhere warmer than his frigid home state of Minnesota, Lewis can’t figure out why he’s supposed to warn Sammy to become a better person. As far as Lewis can see, Sammy is nice to everyone and has the perfect life doing what he wants and making his customers happy. Lewis doesn’t think Sammy needs the cautionary warning Christmas Present is supposed to bring.
As they get to know each other, Lewis and Sammy share their past and present, and bond. The only question is how their one night stand can possibly have a happily-ever-after because Lewis must return home to Minnesota and his everyday life the moment Christmas arrives. The answer is found in the magic of Fielding’s storytelling.
That the title has a double meaning is a nice little twist too.
Fans of Fielding will love this wonderful little tale while new readers will be presented with a holiday gift by a terrific author with an extensive backlist to start following.
