About The Book

Spotlight, who sleeps with a new guy every night, is recognized more for appearing in infomercials than being a superhero.

After a sudden blackout, he and the rest of the world are unable to get physically aroused. No stimulation, no release. Desperate to get back to normal, Spotlight meets Gavin, a prudish scientist, hoping to find a cure.

After the Crusaders, the world’s top heroes, are put out of commission, Spotlight and Gavin are left as the planet’s last hope. They have to put aside their dislike for each other to save the world. Yet the more time they spend together, the more they discover how much they need one another.

Ms. Angel Food’s first novel-length book features a thrilling enemies-to-lovers romance, high heat and spicy scenes, plus tentacles, spandex, and happy endings (both kinds!).

The Review

This was an extremely entertaining read. The blurb made me giggle a bit, but the book is not a comedy.

Spotlight is a superhero under contract to a corporation, and is known more for infomercials than for actually saving the day. He spends his time doing what his bosses tell him and sleeping with a different guy every night.

Gavin is a scientist who works in the lab for the Superheroes, known as Crusaders. He and his colleagues are responsible for finding antidotes for the various toxins the heroes get exposed to, as well as figuring out the technology they’re dealing with.

When something happens that prevents everyone in the planet from getting aroused, Gavin suspects an attack by aliens, but no one takes him seriously except Spotlight, who Gavin dislikes on principle. When the aliens put all the Crusaders out of commission, Gavin has to depend on Spotlight to get him away, and to protect him while he works on a solution.

I liked both the main characters here. They are flawed humans who have made their share of mistakes. While Spotlight is used to ignoring his responsibilities as much as possible, this is one time when he has to step up, since there is no one else. Gavin, however, is a workaholic who can’t think of anything beyond his job.

The two bond over their attempts to reverse what has come to be known as the Denial, while staying clear of the aliens who want to take them out. Things are further complicated by a billionaire who claims to have a cure, causing mass rioting, but who Gavin and Spotlight suspect is working for the aliens.

The plot is interesting, and the pacing is just right. Apart from Gavin and Spotlight, none of the other characters are memorable, but the two of them more than make up for it. I like how their relationship develops, but I certainly wouldn’t call it an enemies to lovers romance. More like two guys who don’t like each other all that much, falling for each other.

If you like fast-paced science fiction, romances, queer characters and superheroes, you will love this book.
