About The Book

At 130 years old, lone Nova Scotian werewolf Malachi Powers never intended to find a mate, until fate sent him Quinn Boucher, a much younger man. Now, after only a few months, Malachi can’t imagine his life without Quinn. But when Quinn returns to Nova Scotia, Malachi learns that the man who belongs to him has been keeping a secret–something Malachi cannot allow.

At 22, Quinn Boucher has been through more trauma than most people survive in a lifetime. Although he is healing, lately his nightmares have worsened. After he lashes out during a flashback, his employer sends him to Nova Scotia to rest with Malachi at the home of Anax Silas Creighton, ruler of the Canadian werewolves. Face to face with his mate, the man he calls Sire, Quinn can no longer hide the truth.

As Quinn battles his demons with Malachi by his side, a new threat faces them. Silas’s newest guard, Andy, has malevolent intentions against Silas–and the rest of the werewolves of Canada. Only Quinn, with his clairvoyant abilities, can see what Andy truly is and the magic the other man wields, and only Quinn is left to fight when Andy takes control of Malachi, Silas, and the other guards. But to save his mate and the others, Quinn must first defeat the worst of his buried memories–memories now fueled by Andy’s power.

This book includes intense descriptions of flashbacks to abuse and sexual assault, harsh language including one use of the F-slur against a gay man, depictions of PTSD, and on-page unaliving of an evil werewolf. The main characters’ relationship includes a VERY large age gap (over a century; werewolves live a long time!) and one character consensually commanding the other. This book is set in the Real Werewolves Don’t Eat Meat universe but is not a direct part of that series.

The Review

Malachi Powers and his mate Quinn Boucher’s story continues, and it is a story that was welcomed and enjoyed.

Silas, the Anax of Canada, has sent for Malachi regarding trouble with Quinn, so Malachi doesn’t question it and answers the call. When Quinn arrives at Silas’ home it is apparent to Malachi that Quinn is not well, and he is determined to find out why.

Quinn was a guard for Tobias, the US Anax, and he was sent to Nova Scotia with the hope of getting the help that he needed with his mate at his side. Quinn suffers from PTSD and extreme nightmares, and a simple touch when he doesn’t expect it can cause him to lash out, which is exactly what happened when his friend and Tobias’ mate touched him. Now Quinn feels guilty for punching his friend, despite everyone telling him it was not his fault.

Malachi is a packless wolf and a loner living in his cottage with no one around, and he still mourns the loss of his past lover, but Quinn is his mate, and nothing will keep him from helping him. Despite the century age difference between them, and the fact that Malachi did not want to perform the mate bond, he had no say in the matter. Now, with Quinn in Massachusetts, they don’t see each other very often, but they speak on the phone and on the computer.

When Quinn receives a call from the Alpha of the Boundary Pack, the pack responsible for most of his nightmares, it sets him back. No one knows how the Alpha got his phone number. Quinn has suffered so much since being turned – including the loss of half his past pack, and abuse at the hands of some pack members, which accounts for his PTSD. But he hasn’t revealed everything that happened to him.

When Quinn sees one of the guards surrounded by colors indicating deceit, he knows that trouble is coming. And when Silas exhibits strange behavior, Quinn must try to remember everything from his past to help him keep the future from being destroyed.

I remember all the characters in this series from reading Real Werewolves Don’t Eat Meat, another wonderful series that I would highly recommend. In both series, there are those who want to destroy what is, and turn it into something evil.

Malachi and Quinn are wonderful – their relationship is described as boy/sire. The time in Nova Scotia is bringing their bond closer and closer, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series to see where their lives have taken them.

Five stars.
