The Necromancer’s Smile: Taking Care of Business
Book three.
(Please note, this is a trilogy covering the same main characters throughout. Reading books one and two is best before reading this one).

When Sy learned that Connor, the young familiar who’d been staying with him, had been captured, he knew immediately that he could find him. After all, what use was it, him being a Necromancer, if he couldn’t locate lost souls. The fact he was hosting Dakar’s parents at the time, shouldn’t have made it an issue. After all, they were pack orientated and understood the need to bring a family member home. Didn’t they?

Dakar had been a loving son for fifty years, so when his mom pitched a fit at him, for being part of the efforts to bring Connor home, he was a wee bit annoyed. Unfortunately, he had bigger things to worry about. A demon had set his sights on his mate, and while that wasn’t as unusual as you might think, this particular demon came with complications.

Everything is coming to a head for this unusual family. A wicked sprite, an off-course priest, and a demoness who isn’t all she appears to be are just some of the hurdles Sy and Dakar will have to cross before they finally get their HEA. And what was a dragon doing in the middle of a field?

This is an MM paranormal romance story and part of a trilogy. It contains men loving men, as well as cheeky spirits, a Necromancer growing in confidence, and a wolf shifter who’s getting more familiar with magic every day.

Trigger warning: One of the sub-plots in this story deals with historic child abuse. If this is an issue for you, please don’t purchase this book.

“Thank you for your ringing endorsement of my skills.” Sy stood up and clicked his fingers, his shoulders sagging under the familiar weight of his coat. “I realize most of you here don’t know me very well, and probably discount me as Dakar’s arm-candy, but as the ruling Necromancer in this county, it is my duty, part of the oath I swore when I took this position, to protect Connor and familiars like him.”

“We’ve been in tighter fixes before and got out just fine.”

“You went to the Underworld with nothing but a bunch of tattoos and your mate’s word to go on. You may believe you’re caring for your mate by supporting him in what he does, but he had no right to ask that of you. Tell me, if your mate is so magnificent, how is he taking care of you?”

Straightening his spine, Dakar shook his head. Taking three steps to the pantry, he quickly unlocked the gun safe Brock had allowed Brad to install, finding Brad’s gun and bullets. Loading the gun efficiently, he handed it to Kendall.

“What…?” Kendall looked at the gun in askance.

“Wait.” Dakar held up his finger and then pulled off his shirt. “A bunch of fucking tattoos, I believe you said.”

“I didn’t curse about them.” For the first time in his life, Dakar heard a note of uncertainty in his dad’s voice.

“But that’s what you think all this is?” Dakar ran his hand down his heavily inked torso. He remembered the hours Sy spent, lovingly etching every mark on his skin, warding him against magic and every other form of attack. “Artwork from my mate because he doesn’t like unmarked skin perhaps. Perhaps you and mom thought Sy has some kind of kink, or maybe these markings are all part of his hoodoo voodoo dark magic?”

A flush covered Angie’s cheeks, causing Dakar to snarl. “I’ll show you how my mate protects me.” He turned to Kendall. “Shoot me.”

The flames burned hot, but they bent away from his touch as Dakar stood on the ring of fire. Spreading his arms wide, Dakar let his head fall back, as he felt the caress against his skin. Whispers. Licks. Just like his lover’s touch.

“What more people need to realize is that it’s people like you, Sy, who make sure that the dangers in this world, most of which can barely be comprehended and only imagined in the darkest of nightmares, stay in the imagination only. And that even though most people don’t see the dangers, they should still respect the ones who risk their lives to keep it that way.”

"...Do you want to know what the most important thing about your son is to me?... He accepts me, exactly the way I am. A concept it would appear he learned entirely on his own.”
