Don’t Judge a Prince by his Undergarments

by Lisa Oliver

The only goal Prince Syrius Fortune of Rosenhip had during his twin sister's "meet the suitors" ball, was to stay quiet and out of the way. His sister's event had been in the planning for five years, and he and his loving father had already agreed trying to seek a wedding contract for himself was not a good idea. Prince Syrius had quirks, and it wasn't as though he needed to open himself up to ridicule from someone else, especially a spouse he would have to get to know. The event was only a week, and being a lot smaller than his older brothers, Syrius was used to not being seen. Until someone did see him.

King Mintyn of Marinkaw had been a soldier since he was fifteen years old. He was not impressed to find out the one time of the year he was supposed to be meeting King Fortune to sign their Golden Straits agreement was apparently the one time his friend decided to have a huge event going on. However, his aide told him he had been invited, and it was only one ball. Mintyn could enjoy some good food, network a while, and then leave the following morning once the treaty was signed.

That was until he saw a young vision being hassled by an entitled duke. On learning the vision being hassled was his friend's youngest son, Mintyn decided to intervene. It was the nice thing to do. One shortened dance later as Prince Syrius walked away from him after he put his foot in his mouth, Mintyn told his aide to rejiggle his schedule. He had a spouse to woo.

This is one of those light stories that my muse weaves sometimes simply to make people smile. There are no deep and meaningful plot lines, just a bit fun between two men who look so unsuited for each other on the surface of things, but their pairing proves opposites do attract and stay together. It is in the same universe as the Infidelity Clause but is totally standalone (Don't laugh my lovely readers, it is honestly, standalone). Watch for cameo appearances by a cupcake eating dragon, an episode of prince throwing, and potato cuffs.

This is an MM arranged marriage story with intimate situations described, along with strong language in places, and situations written for adults only. Please store your content responsibly.

“This is going to raise a few eyebrows,” Syrius said. He rested his arm on Mintyn’s shoulder as Mintyn stood and climbed the stairs, with Syrius resting on his arm. “Are you sure your significant other won’t be upset with you handling another person?”

Mintyn laughed, well aware nearly every eye in the room was on him and the young prince. Reaching the top step, he made sure he was away from the edge of the dancefloor before letting Syrius’s feet rest back on the floor. “I’ve spent my wooing years fighting to rid my country of the people from the crystal valley tribes, who felt if snow fell on a piece of land it belonged to them.” He held out his arms.

“Oh, yes, I’ve read about that.” Syrius slipped into his arms as if he belonged there, and Mintyn thanked his late mother’s insistence he learn to differentiate between his right and left feet. “Their insistence came from a cultural almost cult-like belief, was that right? And they failed to acknowledge the boundaries and borders of neighboring countries. They had to be confined by the World Court, didn’t they?”

“It was the only way they could be stopped in the end.” Mintyn focused on sheltering his partner from avid eyes by moving him and using his body as a shield. “Unfortunately, that cult-like belief resulted in a lot of needless deaths.”

“And leaving you unable to woo a princess at the time.” Syrius smiled up at him – the expression shy, the eyes clear and unafraid which Mintyn found refreshing. “I understand when you returned from the wars, fighting for your land, the first thing you did was replace all your uncle’s advisors and rewrite the succession laws. You are clearly a man who has fought for and now enjoys his independence. That is very inspiring.”

“That wasn’t intentional.” Mintyn had always been brutally honest. “I did what I had to do at the time, and after fighting for so long, I wasn’t prepared to be dictated to by people who had no idea of my life experiences when I got home. Speaking of which, do you have a plan on how to avoid those randy princes who are supposed to be wooing your sister, while they are here? That baby duke who was hanging around you is a classic example.”

Lisa Oliver's first fiction book was The Reluctant Wolf, book one in the Cloverleah series. Since then she's written more than ninety other titles spanning a number of different series including Bound and Bonded, Stockton Wolves, Balance, The God's Made Me Do it, City Dragons, The Necromancer's Smile, and the Alpha and Omega series. When not writing, Lisa can be found with her nose in a book. Her adult children and grandchildren have found the best way to get her off the computer is to offer her chocolate.
