The Review

Connor York lives on the agro planet of Silo with his parents and siblings. He has worked on his family’s farm, but always dreamed of being a navigator and going into space, even though it means leaving everything he has ever known and his family behind.

Thanks to his father’s friendship with the captain of the Asteria, he has been given a rare chance at an apprenticeship as navigator on the ship. His dream has come true. He’s happy to be going into space, and sad to leave his loving family. Unfortunately, some crew members are angry that he got his position due to nepotism, while they all had to work hard to get to where they are.

When he is assigned to engineering, he is bullied, but he accepts whatever is thrown at him, determined to do his job and not let anyone get to him. He understands how many feel about him, and their feelings about nepotism. Duncan Stewart, the navigator in charge of training him, befriends him, but Connor would like their relationship to become more.

An incident on the ship shows what Connor is made of, both as part of the crew and as a human being.

This is a short story, but it’s also a lesson to all those that begrudge someone for getting something they didn’t. Yes, Connor had help getting his apprenticeship but all his actions on the ship after were a testament to his resourcefulness, dedication and concern for those around him.

A very sweet short story about a young man fulfilling his dream of going into space.

4 stars.

The Reviewer

I am an avid reader the mother of 3 sons and grandmother to seven grandchildren. Since retiring I have been doing more reading while volunteering as a CASA worker. CASA is an organization that works with the family court system to ensure that children are in the best living situation. There are way too many children that get overlooked in the foster care system and I visit homes and make visits to the parents. I was born and raised in New York and my husband of 50 years and I live in Upstate New York.
