Deep passion meets raw danger...

Dirk Black, a fist-and-furious undercover cop, knows nothing about lighthouses—except, in his own words, they’re put up by angels to guide seagoing idiots. So when his Detective Inspector assigns him to a solve a murder committed at a lighthouse, the cop is forced to partner with a true expert, his lover Stephan Tavish. But his decision is one wrested from his gut-deep conviction that he—and the powers that be—are putting the man he loves in a verra dangerous position.

In his beguiling way, Stephan is stronger and smarter than any man Dirk’s ever met. But he’s a recovering paraplegic. Can he help solve a mystery in the same kind of old stone-and-masonry tower that caused his crippling injury? Or is this, as the wag once said, deja vu all over again?

Deep passion meets raw danger. Here’s another facet of the love story, and the surprising metamorphosis, of Dirk and Stephan.

From Chapter 3, "Room 121"

The small sign hanging from the door handle read, “Meeting in Progress.”

Not another fucking meeting. Why did MacDowell tell me to report here?

Today he’d encountered too many surprises and too much bad news to stifle a growing surge of outrage. Only an ingrained sense of grim duty compelled him to pull down the lever, walk in, and slam the door, even knowing that his passive-aggressive behavior was a waste of precious energy.

“Not my door sign, Dirk. Not my way of saying hello I love you.”

Riveted by the sound of Stephan’s voice, he looked down the long conference table that dominated the room, past the dozen or so empty chairs, to the far end where his lover was standing in the large silent room.

Standing.

“Stay there, Detective. Let me come to you.”

That was easy, because his kneecaps had turned to gelatin as soon as he gazed at the strong, handsome face, the azure eyes, the creases of his dimples…

“I…like your shirt, Mr. Tavish. Kingfisher meets sky-blue pond.”

“I thought of you when I found it.” Stephan had begun to walk across the hardwood floor, with the aid of two polished ebony canes. His back was straight, but not stiff. The stride was hardly rapid, but not labored. If Dirk didnae know he was gazing at a recovering paraplegic, the figure would look for all the world like a debonair aristocrat who’d chosen a unique way to practice some arcane martial art. In his brilliant blue silk shirt, he seemed to be a cascading wave, come to sweep him far, far out to sea, together alone at last and for all time…

The wave rolled over him, the riptide pulled him under. When Stephan’s warm body met his, when the canes clattered to the floor, Dirk reached out and held him. Burying his face in his lover’s throat, he kissed, and sucked, and bit the pulsing flesh.

Stephan licked his ear. “Not here, love. We have space enough, and time.”

Supporting the man’s body he whispered back, “Why? Why are you stepping into the line of fire, Steph? You’re breaking my bloody heart.”

Stepping is the key word. I’m much stronger than you give me credit for. What makes you think I’d throw myself off a cliff when I have a soul mate to cherish, and every reason to live? You’re fucking with the wrong idiot.”

Outstanding Thriller! 5stars

…Erin O’Quinn knows how to pepper a story that brings out the Scottish flair. I love how she writes all those words that make you feel like you’re in Scotland and know Dirk and Stephan. Especially, Dirk he’s got that heavy Scottish brogue that brings this brooding man to life. The author also creates a complex murder mystery… There all types of ideas that come into play: politics, jealousy, hate, fear, blackmail, hired hitman and a love affair and plenty of suspects that have their minds spinning. The case will find Dirk playing a non-aggressive role thanks to Stephan. Can Dirk handle it, and how long can he keep his hands off Stephan?

Erin O’Quinn brings some history with the journey through Scotland and the Girdle Ness Lighthouse and the Dundee Law locations with descriptions that are beautiful, colorful and dangerous. There’s historical facts about Charles Demuth, an outspoken, gay artist of the 1920’s and 30’s. He was an American water color illustrator and polio victim. One more interesting story from Erin’s imaginative mind is The Roebuck pub, an interesting place that warms the hearts of Dirk and Stephan and a painting that is very intriguing. Too bad they were only fiction.

I will miss all the men: Peter Tavish, such a wonderful, loving father to Stephan and all the boys. Jamie Tavish, loving son to Stephan, and Jonah Rose, Jamie’s boyfriend.

I highly recommend “Steel Nautilus” in fact I will recommend the entire trilogy starting with “Wanted: Lighthouse Keeper” and “Lighthouse Keeper’s Holiday.”

This is the last story from Dirk and Stephan, but “dinnae fash”! Maybe, after Erin O’Quinn lets Dirk and Stephan relax, she may surprise us. I won’t say good bye to them or Erin O’Quinn but I will say “God be wi’ye,” until next time!

About the Author

Erin O'Quinn was born almost literally on the side of a mountain in Nevada and was hauled kicking and screaming into the nearest town, fifty miles away, to attend first grade. To this day, she claims to be kindergarten-deprived.

O'Quinn earned a few degrees from the University of So. California, but her real education began on the back docks of the Las Vegas (NV) Review-Journal newspaper; on the good-old-boy car lots in Abilene, TX where she sold new Chryslers and used cars; and in a big-box store in Austin, TX where she alternately hauled pallets and ran a garden center.

You'll find a lot of action-adventure, and a character-centered, plot-centered group of seven series and a few stand-alones

Of 46 published works for adults, 33 (I think) are in the gay lit (M/M) genre. From the Noble Dimensions series (small town/contemporary) to Old World Ireland, Jacobite-era  and modern Scotland; and back to the retro world of Ireland in the Roaring 20s, she says, "My men, and my settings, are no-frills, no hearts and flowers. But I think a certain nobility and even spiritual element often creep in among the honest sexual feelings."

Any reviews you see are unsolicited, and are always welcome.

Settle back, enjoy what Erin O'Quinn calls "literotica with a flare for the unusual...thoughtful and plotful...men with passions too big for their britches."
