Grant Keeping and Dr. Spencer Corel are getting cozy at the hospital. The conversation moves on to one of Spencer’s patients. He asks Grant to go with him while he checks in on him.
Kris Hillyard, the owner of Gloss a nightclub in High Wycombe, arrived at the hospital unconscious. Grant immediately calls Rylan, one of the co-owners of White Knight Security.
Rylan Jeffers jumps on the situation and heads for the hospital. He’s had his eye on Kris for sometime now, and knows him from volunteering at the Rebel Retreat halfway house, teaching business skills and money management. While he helps handle finances with his friends at the White Knight Security, Rylan also gives instructions at Rebel Retreat. He joined the Retreat to do something constructive and teach teens, and also did background checks on backers and supporters. He got immersed watching Kris’s style of sharing and giving his own attention to the young students.
Kris is ready to leave the hospital, but he can barely stand up, but he thinks that it’s really important to get home. Ready to fall over, he’s caught by a pair of strong hands. Rylan has been instructed by Spencer not to let Kris leave the hospital, so he comes up with a plan. When they enter Kris’ apartment, Rylan can see what he’s worried about. Three furry babies: Night, Shade and an old Tom.
Kris claims he was mugged, but Rylan knows there’s more to it than that. He’s already planned to keep Kris in a safe house at Knightdale Court. First they have to get there in one piece, as they’re apparently being followed. Giving their pursuers the slip, they head to the retreat, where they get help from some of the older teens: Damien and Mallory.
Kris has always taken care of himself, since he was fifteen. He lived on the streets and never took handouts or government subsidies. He didn’t trust anyone but a kitten he found, that became his long time companion.
Kris doesn’t like getting the kids and the retreat involved in his business. But Rylan isn’t ready to give up on him. He’s going to get to the bottom of what’s really going on. He’ll have help, too, as the White Knights and an unlikely insurance investigator spring into action.
I call “White Knight Security” a mini-series, as I don’t know what Jackie Keswick has planned for its future. So far, it’s the story of four men who come together after serving in the military, and open a security company. Grant was the first story and now we have Rylan.
Rylan seems a little more low-key, and he meshes well with Kris, who’s a little more excitable and doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone. I like how the author made Tom a support cat for Kris. Whenever something throws Kris off, he always reaches for Tom.
Rylan has a nice group of characters to go along with Rylan and Kris. There are the teenagers from the retreat: Damien, Mallory and Keefe; the insurance investigator, Drake Norton; and of course, there’s the best: Fritz, Luca, Grant and Spencer.
I highly recommend Rylan (and Grant) – they are quick reads with great characters. Keswick fills them with danger, suspense and some great feel good moments.
I’m ready for the next book – Luca – coming soon.

What is so cool about this Jackie Keswick and this new Protector series is the topic. I have already read book one, meeting Grant. I am aware of the ex-military friendship that had formed and brought the four home to start a new business, doing what they do best. Having some one at home who is very influential, giving their company high recommendations, has kept them busy.
The four share a rather large house with individual wings for their offices and apartments. Like Grant, Rylan Jeffers is sucked into his next job when nightclub owner Chris Hillyard is beaten within an inch of his life, and Rylan takes it personally. He has made finding the culprits a priority, while taking a very personal interest in the man he is protecting.
These are not long novels. The pace is quick as we follow the dropped crumbs to find the answer. Rylan cannot help feeling more as he gets to know Chris.
Another home run for the author… I loved it.
Five stars.

Hi, I’m Maryann, I started life in New York, moved to New Hampshire and in 1965 uprooted again to Sacramento, California. Once I retired I moved to West Palm Beach, Florida in 2011 and just moved back to Sacramento in March of 2018. My son, his wife and step-daughter flew out to Florida and we road tripped back so they got to see sights they have never seen. New Orleans and the Grand Canyon were the highlights. Now I am back on the west coast again to stay! From a young age Ialways liked to read.
I remember going to the library and reading the “Doctor Dolittle” books by Hugh Lofting. Much later on became a big fan of the classics, Edgar Alan Poe, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and as time went by Agatha Christie, Ray Bradbury and Stephen Kingand many other authors.
My first M/M shifter book I read was written by Jan Irving the “Uncommon Cowboys” series from 2012. She was the first author I ever contacted and sent an email to letting her know how much I liked this series. Sometime along the way I read “Zero to the Bone”by Jane Seville, I think just about everyone has read this book!
As it stands right now I’m really into mysteries, grit, gore and “triggers” don’t bother me. But if a blurb piques my interest I will read the book.
My kindle collection eclectic and over three thousand books and my Audible collection is slowly growing. I have both the kindle and audible apps on my ipod, ipads, and MAC. So there is never an excuse not to be listening or reading.
I joined Goodreads around 2012 and started posting reviews. One day a wonderful lady, Lisa Horan of The Novel Approach, sent me an email to see if I wanted to join her review group. Joining her site was such an eye opener. I got introduce to so many new authors that write for the LGBTQ genre. Needless to say, it was heart breaking when it ended.
But I found a really great site, QRI and it’s right here in Sacramento. Last year at QSAC I actually got to meet Scott Coatsworth, Amy Lane and Jeff Adams.
