The Review
This is the fourth book in the series, and the only one I have read. I know I missed a lot, which at first left me a bit lost, but I decided to concentrate on this book and read the descriptions and reviews of the other books, so I had an idea of what went on previously.
Reylan returns with Jorgas from the Wound, a hell dimension. When Reylan visits the Arcadia Trust, he finds it empty and in chaos, and discovers his “mannequin,” Brett, starved and in horrendous condition. Reylan thought he had been gone for just twenty minutes, but it turned out to be five months. He left Iain for dead, and without his help, Reylan and Jorgas would never have gotten free.
It doesn’t take Reylan long before he realizes that Brett is not himself – Iain has occupied his body. Iain’s own body is still in the Wound. Iain explains that Brett had gone insane, and if Iain leaves his body, he will become a crazed monster.
Trying to find his friends, Reylan visits Isobel’s house to find her gone. a horror show left in her place. The house is now occupied by evil. He hides behind a sarcophagus and sees Deborah and someone else performing a human sacrifice, which is quite gory. After the sacrifice Reylan manages to get out alive.
Things get very bad: he finds Patricia and her trusted aide Kelvin, only Kelvin is now visible. Kelvin is a cloak walker – always invisible – and now he’s another victim of whatever possesses the Arcadia Trust building. The only hope is to find and destroy this evil.
I found myself invested in this book – it’s full of surprises, secrets, betrayals and violence, and held my interest from beginning to the end. Still, I missed out on a lot – start at the beginning of this great series.
Five stars.
