Kingdom of Malice is the second epic fantasy in the 6-book Empire of Ash series, which follows 20 years after the Forbidden Queen series. Both series can be read individually.
The Review
Kingdom of Malice is the continuation of the story of Baylore, a city at war with the Whitish. Daymin, the new king of Baylore, is at odds with the other powerful families within the city and struggles to keep control of his panicked people. The magical trees protecting the walls of Baylore have decided to return to their forest, which causes Daymin to take action sooner than he had hoped. His spy Idorii, who is within the Whitish fort must find a way to escape captivity, along with the other magic weavers who have been exploited by the enemy.
Meanwhile, Daymin’s mother, Kalleah is still attempting to gather an army to face the Whitish in their homeland to delay the attack on Baylore. She takes to the sea and finds a rag-tag group of pirates, merchants, women and children who unite in their hatred of Whitland’s tyrannical rule.
Kingdom of Malice is the second book in the Empire of Ash series. I previously read and reviewed the first book, and found it to be good, but a bit on the slow side for me. I sure am glad that I persisted, because I did like this book considerably more. This book moved along at a fast pace and had a great combination of combat, adventure and rich characters. Idorii is still by far my favourite character and the developing friendship between Daymin and Idorii is one of the main reasons that I would continue to read this series – it sounds like there will be 6 books total.
