Over 2,000 years later…

Tobia slammed the door as he entered his one room flat and flung himself onto the sofa. He held the pristine white envelope in his shaky hand. It read Thomas Schaeffer across the middle of the offensive object with his address beneath his fake name. Robin had sent the nasty invitation concealed inside the smooth white stationary with the fancy writing.

The detestable sun peeked into the sky, starting its long, depriving journey across the sky, draining him of his energy and negating the adrenaline that tried in vain to infuse his blood. “I'm going to have to change my strategy.” He snarled as he fell back onto the sofa. He still held the invitation as if not letting it go could change things. His exhaustion compelled him to sleep even as he struggled to stay awake and examine this betrayal. He imagined Robin's smiling face and dark hair, and he longed for him as he drifted off.

His name had been Tobia so long ago when he was a boy growing up in a small village in the middle of where modern Germany is now located. He lived his youth centuries ago when the Celtics dominated the lands to the south, and he barely remembered it. He couldn't even return to his village to rekindle those memories as generation after generation had built on top of the site. It no longer existed. Tobia couldn't find it if he tried. His family was gone as well. None left to call him Tobia. Thomas was the name he had been using the last several years, at least since he’d met Robin.

The joyous man was to be his, and he had watched him, loving him from a distance. He apparently hadn’t noticed. He wanted Robin to love him enough to join him in his eternal damnation. He was a fool—Tobia the fool.

He remembered the first time he saw his sweet Robin. The full moon hung low in the summer night sky, and the music rocked the little bar called Latitudes on the top of one of the downtown buildings where he waited tables to put himself through college.

Tobia enjoyed the open-air freshness of the bar, and he loved to watch Robin bustle around serving drinks. Robin’s body was lithe, delicate, and energetic like a dancer. His brown eyes, deep and caring, glittered with concern even though he only asked him what he would like to drink.

“Corona, with a lime.” It was Tobia’s go to drink.
