Excerpt:

Lang found himself relieved Parson was staying when he heard the others pull away from his house. "I know Dread's angry, but what was I supposed to do?"

"Let me see..." Parson sat on the arm of the sofa. "You could have dialed 911. A patrolman might have gotten here quicker."

Lang shook his head. "They'd have left -- left me here me alone -- when they didn't find anything."

"Exactly, Langston."

He swallowed hard. "Maybe..."

"Maybe what, Lang?" Parson's voice became louder as he moved to stand right in front of him. "Yeah, Cat Woods is crazy, but he's not stupid, Lang. He's long gone. I can't promise you the motherfucker will stay gone."

Lang witnessed Parson's blue eyes darken with... anger. He backed away, but Parson grabbed his arm. "Don't you dare shrink away from me." Guiding Langston to the lounger he always read in, Parson pushed him into the seat. "Those guys, motorcycle club members, my friends, my family, dropped every Goddamn thing they were doing to come to your aid. Your law, even if they caught Cat on your property, would have done no more than lock him up for the night. Cat singled you out because he knows any one of us -- any of us rowdy ass monsters -- would have beat his fucking ass." Standing over Langston, Pars' voice grew so low, Lang strained to hear, "I want to fuck him up for giving you a minute of discomfort. Had he touched you, I would have killed him with my bare hands." His words, no matter how quiet, carried a frightening finality.

Staring at Parson, Langston wanted to reach out, touch him, hold him. But old habits were hard to break. Instead, he flinched away. "Parson, don't."

"I'll be in your spare bedroom." Parson strode toward the stairway. "Tonight, you're safe, Lang. from me and from Cat. Sleep well."

Langston didn't know how long he sat and stared at the spot vacated by Parson. Going upstairs, he could not help but notice light coming from beneath the door of the spare bedroom. Leaning his forehead against the doorframe, Langston whispered, "I wanted you here."
