Saving Moses

by Lisa Oliver

Moses lived from moment to moment. He had no past and his future was always in doubt. Living in the moment was his only means of survival. Until a biker with a sense of ‘other’ walks into the bar where he works and changes his world forever.

Moses, no last name because a slave didn’t deserve one, moved through one moment to the next in full survival mode. His owner, Conrad, called him Frog and even shaved his head so he’d look like one. Moses spent his day serving at the bar, making chicken wings and burgers, and then cleaning every night when Conrad locked him in once the bar was closed. Dwelling on his past brought Moses no joy, and Conrad had already told him he had no future. All Moses could do was appreciate flashes of joy while trying to avoid the fists that often came his way.

Tucker, no last name because he was an alpha wolf and didn’t need one, was getting tired of his restless animal half dragging him across state boundaries in an endless quest to find his fated mate. Striding into a bar in a place called Dusty Dew of all things, all Tucker hoped for was a cold beer and hot wings. What he got was so much more. He just didn’t realize he was going to have to rescue the prize he’d been looking for.

Torn between avenging the injustices Moses had suffered and keeping his mate safe, Tucker did what he had to do. But the journey home wasn’t without problems and Tucker was determined Moses would be safe before he was claimed.
Saving Moses is a Quirk of Fates short book. It’s where I have two men in their head that want to be together, but they don’t want to go through a long story arc to get there either. As Tucker said, “we’re fated mates. The rest should be easy.” So here you go – Tucker and Moses story, in short form. Enjoy.

As with all of my books, Saving Moses is about two men who will come to love each other. There is some on page violence, coarse language, and an intimate scene (Just the one because this is a short). There is also a taciturn alpha, a wonderful omega who lives in the moment, and a few friends to help make things happen. Oh, and a trip to Las Vegas. This story is completely standalone and is roughly 27,000 words.

Moses felt as though his entire insides had turned to jelly as he listened to Tucker’s instructions and climbed up on the back of the big bike. It was a comfortable seat, and the bike even had pegs he could rest his thin sneakers on. He was sure his face was going to go up in flames when Tucker told him to hold around his middle. He didn’t think he’d ever been so close to another person unless Conrad was beating him. But still buoyed by his decision, Moses slipped his arms around Tucker’s waist when told to, and it was as if every fragmented feeling and thought he’d ever had all suddenly slipped into place.

Cocooned in a leather jacket far too big for him, Moses closed his eyes, trusting Tucker to take him wherever they needed to go. The idea he was no longer subject to Conrad’s orders – not to mention the constant cruelty and humiliating jibes – hadn’t sunk in yet. He wasn’t sure where he’d got the courage to make a decision for himself. Or how long it will last. But as the miles between the bike and the bar stretched longer, Moses found himself thinking about what Tucker had said about Fated Mates.

It all sounded very romantic – not that Moses knew a lot about that sort of thing. From the brief memories he had of his parents, he remembered them laughing together, and touching each other constantly. He knew he’d been loved and cherished. Moses pressed harder against Tucker’s back as a familiar lump bloomed in his chest.

An ache had started growing the day he’d been dragged away from his parents’ house and had never gone away. Initially, Moses had cried himself to sleep every night, wishing to the stars that the people who’d taken him had made a mistake.

He imagined his father in his fur covered glory breaking down his door at night, sweeping him away at speed, before dropping him back into his mom’s comforting arms. Remembering the stories his mom used to read to him, he would keep the crusts of his lunchtime sandwiches in his pockets, so he could drop crumbs out of the window of the house bus they traveled in. Later, of course, he realized the futility of his actions, but as a child, the dreams that his parents would find him were all he thought about. Little did he know it would take him years to be rescued.

The being swept off my feet came true though, and as Moses was now an adult, he was going to enjoy it. Originally, when he used to dream of being saved, Moses’s head was filled with his mother’s hugs and being taken out for ice cream as a treat. Tucked up on the back of Tucker’s bike, Moses inhaled the sweet scent that held the undertones of wolf and pure man. It was heady, totally intoxicating, and it caused a swelling in parts of Moses’s body that had rarely gotten hard before. I wonder if Tucker can smell that sweetness on me?
