by Karenna Colcroft

A werewolf pack reels from the loss of five members, including the Alpha and Beta, at the teeth and claws of Canadian werewolves. Summoned by a frantic call from a young werewolf who survived the massacre, Anax Tobias Rogan, the highest-ranked wolf in the United States, heads to North Dakota.

Tobias is able to stabilize the pack, but his trip takes a toll on his relationship with his mate, Kyle Slidell. When the Canadian Anax, Silas Creighton, requests a meeting, Tobias seizes the opportunity for a trip with Kyle to restore their connection.

With an international conflict to resolve and a traumatized young werewolf in tow, Tobias and Kyle struggle to find time for each other. And then assassins try to take Tobias’s life…

This book includes discussions of past sexual assault and physical child abuse, homophobia including a French Canadian homophobic slur, a child character living with cancer, and depictions of grief and mourning.

The gun went off.

My heart stopped. For a moment, I was surrounded by trees, a searing pain in my leg as I stared up at a full moon.

I blinked. That was months ago. This was a June morning, bright sunlight streaming down, and I was on a beach. Unhurt.

But others were wounded. I smelled blood. I had no time to dwell in the past. I had to protect Quinn.

Maurice yanked Quinn away from Giles, grabbing him around the throat. Quinn struggled, unable to free himself as the other man tightened his hands. Blood droplets flew. I couldn’t tell from where, but they meant something horrible.

I leapt. My aim was good. I knocked the man away from Quinn and landed on him, teeth bared. He had threatened one of mine. I would destroy him.

“Stop!”

The shout came from the water. I stayed where I was, growling, wanting so badly to tear out the man’s throat that I could taste the blood.

Lying pale on the ground, Quinn coughed. “Anax. No, please.”

“Tobias!”

My mate’s voice. I looked up to see Kyle, followed by Silas, Wallace, and Patrick, running at full speed.

“Tobias, let him go,” Silas ordered.

I didn’t have to obey him. I didn’t have to obey anyone.

Tobias, you’re scaring Quinn, Kyle said. He’s hurt. Don’t make this worse for him.

I looked down at the wide, terrified eyes of the man beneath me and stepped back to look around.

Giles was on the ground. Unmoving. The ground around him was red.

Wallace grabbed Maurice. Kyle went to Quinn and knelt, putting his arm over Quinn as Quinn rolled onto his side and vomited. “What…” Kyle said. “Oh, shit. Anax!”

“What is it?” Silas looked around, then hurried to Kyle and Quinn. As he dropped to his knees beside Kyle, he called, “Tobias, if you hear me, shift back. I need you human.”

Something splashed and scraped nearby. Immediately on my guard, I whirled to face a thin, scraggly-looking man who was pulling a rowboat up onto the shore. “Is he okay?” the man asked. I growled, and he growled back. “Easy. Friend.”

“Malachi,” Silas said. “What are you doing here?”

“I was out for a boat ride. Saw what was going on here and thought maybe your wolf needed help.” He glanced at me. “The boy?”

“It hurts,” Quinn moaned. “I’m sorry.”

“Shush,” Kyle said gently. We need you. Please shift back now.

I lay down and closed my eyes. Adrenaline still coursed through me. I had to take revenge on the one who had hurt Quinn. Who had tried to kill me. Giles was dead, but the other still lived, and I could not allow that. The last thing I wanted was to be human again. But Quinn was one of my wolves. He was hurt. He needed me.

He was hurt. And it was my fault. He had tried to protect me when I should have been the one protecting him.

That didn’t help me want to shift back.

About the Author

Karenna Colcroft lives just north of Boston, Massachusetts, and has been in love with the city since childhood, though she has yet to encounter any werewolves, vampires, or other paranormal beings in her travels. At least none that she knows of. Though since in her non-writing life, under another name, she offers services as a channel and energy healing practitioner, it could be said that she herself is a paranormal being. The jury’s still out on that.

Karenna is a polyamorous, nonbinary human who splits time between the home she shares with her husband and the one she shares with her committed partner. She also has two adult children and a bonus son, three grandchildren, and two and a half cats. (Half in terms of time the cat lives with her, not in terms of the cat itself…)
