I whirled to face this new uninvited guest. From the easy way the others instantly obeyed, I knew he must be their leader.
He was taller than Darik, but with cobalt blue skin and dark hair cropped in a military style that did nothing to hide his pointed ears. Seeing so many with ears like mine made me reflexively reach up to touch my own. I’d always hidden mine behind my long hair, ashamed of being made fun of for most of my life.
This man didn’t look like he’d ever been ashamed. He stood tall, his chest out, face stoic. Until he met my gaze. Then that ethereal mask melted into something akin to adoration, stirring something inside of me. I shook my head, trying to break the spell.
He strode toward me, practically gliding across the ground. There was no doubt in my mind that he would protect me. His steady forest-green eyes held the promise of it, if I accepted.
